Lucky Soul - The Great Unwanted
Artist:
Lucky Soul
Label: Ruffa Lane
Release Date: 09/04/07
Rating:
Phil Spector might be on trial for murder at present, but Lucky Soul are taking on his shimmer-pop mantle. In their debut album, 'The Great Unwanted', the immaculately-tailored Greenwich six-piece have created a lush, harmonious soundscape that looks set to make them one of the brightest new (well, ish) bands in 2007.
The closest reference point for the band seems to be The Pipettes, without the matching dresses-twee or heavy lashings of irony. Opener 'Add Your Light To Mine, Baby' and former single 'Ain't Never Been Cool' are brass-tinged, 50s doo-wop classics in the making, while Ali Howard's astonishing vocals on 'Baby I'm Broke' are a delicate, slow-burning foil to the rest of the album's cheery retro-pop.
Much as we hate punning on album titles, we really feel the need to say that Lucky Soul *deep breath* shouldn't be unwanted for much longer.
