The Ruby Suns - Kenya Dig It?

Artist: The Ruby Suns

Rating: 2/5

Even bearing in mind that we've quite a weak spot for names and jokes with puns in them, 'Kenya Dig It?' may have pushed the boat just that little too far. Dodgy name aside, this four track EP is very much like walking into a pound store. You walk in, you see a few things you might buy but don't really need and more often than not, you leave empty handed and forget about the whole experience.

The title track admittedly has a few early Beck-esque moments mixed in with a splash of Mercury Rev, but on subsequent listens it becomes apparent that there isn't a huge amount that this or any of the other tracks have to offer. Third track 'Papatuanuku' does however bring back memories of 'Club Tropicana', which just about sums it up.

The biggest problem with The Ruby Suns is that their songs seem to suffer from a massive lack of direction, a hollow attempt at quirky floaty pop that seems neither here nor there when it comes down to the crunch. With a bit of work, there is potentially something salvageable from this mangled wreck of random ideas and melodies, but as it stands, this is one to leave alone.

'Kenya Dig It?' is released as a single through Memphis Industries on 26th May 2008.
